IDEAL LOCATION NORTH SEA CANAL REGION

The southern part of the North Sea accommodates around 160 operational oil & gas platforms and five operational wind farms. Seven more wind farms will be added in the near future. Download the road map below.

The relatively short distance to these platforms and wind farms makes the North Sea Canal region the ideal location for suppliers and service providers in the offshore sector. Companies in the area are active in fields such as:

  • offshore wind maintenance (including cable logistics)
  • drilling projects for gas extraction
  • changes to and maintenance of work vessels and platforms
  • disassembly of offshore structures and vessels (decommissioning)
  • logistic services
  • HR
  • facility services

The majority of these companies and government bodies are members of Amsterdam IJmuiden Offshore Ports.

We serve the interests of our members by:

  • proactively identifying and sharing trends and market developments
  • establishing links with innovation and research institutes and governments
  • jointly developing business cases that stimulate the energy transition.

Our members can align their products and services, either jointly or individually.

ENERGY TRANSITION

The North Sea is playing a key role in realising a climate-neutral energy system that is reliable and affordable – initially via oil & gas production and now, increasingly, via renewable energy. This includes the large-scale production of wind energy, and options for hydrogen and CO2 storage underground.

Due to the transition to sustainable energy and the approaching end of the economic lifespan of oil & gas platforms, substantial investments will be made in the years ahead in:

  • more offshore wind
  • underground CO2 storage
  • possibilities for hydrogen
  • solar at sea
  • wave energy
  • decommissioning of old platforms

The North Sea Canal area has the potential to become the leading region in the Netherlands for future offshore energy. Why?

  • Due to its favorable location in relation to wind farms and platforms.
  • Thanks to established suppliers and end customers within the offshore sector.
  • Because of the availability of physical space, especially with the future Energy Harbor.
  • Possessing the knowledge, space, and financial resources for innovation.
  • Through the collaborative strength between governments, companies, and (national) educational institutions

ENERGY TRANSITION IN THE NORTH SEA CANAL REGION: THERE’S FAR MORE HAPPENING THAN YOU REALISE!

The energy and circular transition require space in our port and industrial areas. Housing is being constructed at the peripheries, contributing to a healthier living environment. Due to climate change, the limits of our water system are becoming apparent, necessitating more space to manage water.

The development perspective for the North Sea Canal Area (NZKG) in brief:

INTEGRATED APPROACH

An integrated approach is essential to make the most of the offshore energy potential of the North Sea Canal region and contribute to the realisation of a climate-neutral energy system. Benefits can be gained by linking the various energy functions, such as the production of wind, hydrogen and natural gas, but this requires cooperation within the golden triangle of government, research/education institutes and business to ensure everything is optimally aligned. A wide span of perspectives must be included, ranging from technology, market and society to ecology, spatial planning and regulations.

Close cooperation between sectors and parties that utilise the offshore energy potential of the North Sea will result in CO2 reductions, cost savings, the effective use of space at sea and an acceleration of the energy transition. Proper collaboration and coordination will help us make the most of opportunities and place the North Sea Canal area on the map as the Dutch region for offshore energy.
