AYOP member FincoEnergies focuses on sustainable fuel

We welcome FincoEnergies to the AYOP network! FincoEnergies distributes fuels and supplies them to end users. Account manager Stephan Lintjer tells us more about what FincoEnergies does, what drives them and what the future of sustainable fuel looks like.

Delivering fuel on land and on water

FincoEnergies works downstream in the oil chain, so they do everything from the refinery. They work on land and on water and have their own depots, bunker barges and trucks. Stephan Lintjer is account manager of FincoEnergies Marine. Stephan explains, “We operate from Vlissingen to Eemshaven. We have 9 depots along the coast and bunker boats in all seaports. With these we deliver fuels to, for example, the offshore wind sector, maritime companies or the fishing industry.”

Leader in renewable energy

FincoEnergies’ objective is clear: they want to be the forerunner in renewable energy. “The focus is on renewable energy. Right now we supply about 3/4 fossil and 1/4 renewable energy, but this will keep shifting in the coming years. Compared to competitors, we have already taken major steps,” Stephan Lintjer said.

The power of cooperation

FincoEnergies takes these steps by not just being a supplier, but by looking at the possibilities together with customers. Stephan: “We believe in the power of cooperation. We work together with our customers to keep improving and make our business more efficient. That way we can save costs and become more sustainable together. We also help in the preparations to comply with new European directives and obligations. CO2 is the key word: we try to emit as little as possible.”

New fuels save money

New fuels are therefore gaining an increasingly important share within FincoEnergies. Stephan explains: “We already provide our customers with HVO, a drop in fuel that requires no modifications to the engines. We custom blend this for the customer, for example 90% fossil fuel and 10% HVO: HVO10. Charges for CO2 emissions are coming soon in Europe. So the less you emit, the more money you save. In that context, we also look at things like lighting and a customer’s vehicle fleet. But for our customers, the biggest emissions are from ships.”

The fuel of the future

There are still quite a few challenges in making fuel systems on ships more sustainable, Stephan says: “Ships usually last about 30 to 40 years, at least. So it will take some time before we can completely switch to new fuels using different engines for propulsion. Nobody knows what the fuel of the future will be. It will probably be a combination of different fuels. Our challenge lies in facilitating those different types of fuels and the various blends such as HVO10 and HVO20. You have to be able to keep doing all of this logistically and be able to keep offering it.”

Serving the AYOP network

When asked why FincoEnergies joined AYOP, Stephan says the following: “Many of the AYOP members I already knew because of different events or because we already were business partners. We can help many companies who have their own vleet. We serve different companies, large and small, and can function as a knowledge center to help get on the right track.”

New business thanks to AYOP event

The first new collaborations within the AYOP network are coming soon, Stephan says: “During the LOL meeting at Bluestream, I spoke to Sietse from Deep BV. We were already doing business with Deep and got into a conversation about sustainability. This chat enhanced our relationship, and we have now created a plan for 2025 for the use of HVO. And so this came about because we ran into each other at an AYOP event!”
